Cromdale Streetcar Barn (80 Street & 116 Ave)

Designed by Edmonton’s City Architect Allan Merrick Jeffers, the Cromdale Streetcar Barn replaced Edmonton’s first streetcar barn on Syndicate Avenue (95th Street) in 1913.

Problems in the construction of the Cromdale Streetcar Barn led to the office of the City Architect being abolished.

Today, the streetcar barn is gone – its footprint now is an open yard and its former yard is the site of the Cromdale Bus Barn. The original powerhouse remains nearby and is the last original Edmonton Radial Railway building standing in Edmonton.

This photo shows two survivors of the original Edmonton Radial Railway operation. The powerhouse in the background is now an Epcor substation and the streetcar in the fore ground (#Edmonton31) is part of the Edmonton Radial Railway Society collection. Its condition is beyond restoration though and they plan to use it as a pattern for a future replica streetcar.

It sure would be interesting if the Edmonton Radial Railway Society could turn the powerhouse into a museum at some point in the future. Maybe one day they could open another streetcar line on Alberta Avenue and this structure could be a streetcar barn for that operation…
