The Alberta Legislature (or “Parliament” as is was originally called) has been a fixture in Edmonton’s architectural landscape for a century, but it was not the first Parliament building that Edmonton had, nor was it the first building on what we now know as the legislature grounds.
The Terrace Building was Alberta’s Legislature/Parliament building before the current structure was erected and Fort Edmonton was at this site since the 1840s. Both landmarks are now gone. The Fort exists as an impressive replica (as part of Canada’s largest living history museum) and the Terrace Building has been demolished and rebuilt.
